Lemonade has long been a symbol of summer, its refreshing blend of water, sugar and lemon juice offering not just refreshment amid the heat but also plenty of health benefits. Despite lemonade taking various forms across the globe, its three main ingredients have remained largely unchanged for over a millennium.
For example, Turkish lemonade makes use of the whole lemon and incorporates grated lemon zest for a bittersweet twist. Parisian lemonade offers a customizable experience, with separate pitchers of syrup, water and lemon juice for drinkers to combine based on their preference. Meanwhile, in Portugal and North Africa, people prefer to mix cold brew coffee with lemon juice and syrup for a bold, caffeinated version. [1]
Because this classic drink is open to a wide range of variations, you can add other nutritious ingredients to lemonade to further boost its benefits, flavor and nutritional value. For instance, you can mix in turmeric for color and warmth; manuka honey (instead of sugar) for a healthier source of sweetness; berry accents for more antioxidants; and electrolyte drops for a more hydrating summer lemonade.
How to upgrade lemonade using natural ingredients*
Most of the nutrients in lemonade come from lemon juice. Pure lemon juice contains a variety of essential vitamins (A, C, E, B3, B5, B6 and B9) and minerals (calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and selenium) plus beneficial phytonutrients, such as the antioxidant carotenoids: beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein and zeaxanthin. [2] While these are already impressive, lemonade can offer even more nutrition and health benefits when combined with other wholesome ingredients, such as:
Organic Turmeric
Turmeric is a popular spice best known for its association with curry and widely reported health benefits. Derived from the underground stems of the Curcuma longa plant, turmeric has a warm, earthy flavor with notes of ginger and pepper – the perfect spice to give depth to savory dishes. [3]
But before turmeric became a culinary wonder, it served as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Turmeric’s health-supporting properties are attributed by studies to its main active compound, curcumin, whose biological activities range from soothing minor discomforts to protecting healthy cells from oxidative damage. [4]
Aside from curcumin, turmeric contains several other components with powerful antioxidant properties, such as curcuminoids, sesquiterpenoids, monoterpenoids, norsesquiterpenoids and norditerpenes. [5] Turmeric also boasts a wide array of essential nutrients, such as protein, fiber, vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3, B6, E and K), minerals (calcium, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc) and healthy (mono- and polyunsaturated) fats. [6]
While highly potent and beneficial, turmeric is extremely efficient at absorbing heavy metals from the soil. This means most turmeric products on the market are likely contaminated with heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium. Turmeric products may also be contaminated with harmful bacteria, which is why you should only purchase from vendors you can trust.
The Health Ranger Store only offers turmeric products that have passed our stringent qualifications for cleanliness, purity and quality. The raw materials used in Health Ranger Select Organic Turmeric Root Powder underwent a series of rigorous quality inspections which covered how the organic turmeric was harvested to how it was ground into a fine powder, steam sterilized and sifted until it was finally packaged. Our premium organic turmeric root powder has also undergone extensive lab testing for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbiology to ensure its safety and potency.
Manuka Honey
Manuka honey is a type of honey produced only in New Zealand and some coastal areas in Australia. It is made by bees that pollinate the flowers of the manuka bush, specifically the species Leptospermum scoparium. Considered by many to be “medicinal,” manuka honey has found use in clinical settings, particularly in European hospitals. [7]
Manuka honey’s beneficial properties are directly linked to methylglyoxal (MGO), a unique compound found abundantly in manuka. MGO is mostly responsible for the non-peroxide activity (NPA) of manuka honey – a factor that sets it apart from other honeys. While most honeys rely on hydrogen peroxide to exert their beneficial effects, manuka honey has MGO and a whole host of other compounds, such as antioxidant flavonoids, 3-deoxyglucosone and other dicarbonyls, that contribute to its biological activities. [8]
Manuka honey is also more shelf-stable than other honeys, thanks to compounds like leptosperin and dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the MGO precursor that directly comes from the nectar of the manuka flower. The presence of leptosperin and DHA, together with MGO and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), an indicator of honey freshness, determines the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) rating of manuka honey. The higher the UMF rating, the higher the quality and potency of the manuka honey.
Manuka’s ability to support the body’s natural healing processes is linked to two compounds, methyl syringate and leptosin, both of which are also potent antioxidants. [9] Other compounds in manuka with similar antioxidant activities include various phenolic acids (e.g., protocatechuic, syringic and gentisic acids) and flavonoids (e.g., quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, apigenin and galangin). [10]
While not a major source of essential nutrients, manuka honey still contains decent amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins B2, B3, B5 and C and calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium and zinc. [11]
For high-quality manuka honey, try Health Ranger Select Premium Manuka Honey MGO 514+ (15+ NPA). Organic berries
Berries are some of nature’s most prolific superfoods. While normally small in size, these bite-sized fruits are overflowing with essential nutrients, antioxidants and health benefits. Berries are also rich in flavor and juicy goodness, making them some of the best ingredients to boost the nutritional value and hydrating qualities of healthy drinks like lemonade.
When talking about berries, studies often highlight their nutrient profiles because they are undeniably impressive. Berries are a good source of fiber, vitamins (A, B, C, E and K) and minerals (calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and zinc) and are low in fat, calories and sodium. [12]
But what’s most impressive about berries is their high antioxidant content. You won’t find many fruits (or foods in general) capable of exceeding the antioxidant capacity of berries. Berries are a significant source of phenolic compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, lignans and stilbenes, all of which can fight harmful free radicals and protect healthy cells from oxidative stress. [13]
Many berries like blueberries, elderberries, acai berries and aronia berries (black chokeberries) are known for having high amounts of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins refer to a group of plant pigments that give various fruits and vegetables their deep red, blue and purple colors. Anthocyanins possess a wide range of health-supporting properties, including antioxidant activities that are highly regarded for their potency. [14] The cellular protection offered by antioxidants plays a huge role in the maintenance of good overall health.
To help you boost your daily intake of anthocyanins and other powerful antioxidants, the Health Ranger Store is proud to bring you Groovy Bee® Organic Super Anthocyanins Powder. This specially formulated blend combines the antioxidant benefits of 5 nutrient- and anthocyanin-rich organic berries, namely, acai berries, elderberries, blueberries, maqui berries and aronia berries. It also contains a good amount of betalains – red and yellow antioxidant pigments – from organic beet juice powder, making this premium powder blend a true antioxidant powerhouse.
Groovy Bee® Organic Super Anthocyanins Powder is easy to incorporate into various recipes, especially fruit-based drinks like smoothies, juices and lemonade. It is vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free, China-free, certified Kosher and organic, and lab tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbiology.
Electrolyte Drops
Minerals are among the most vital nutrients your body requires. Since they cannot be produced by the body, you must obtain them through a balanced diet rich in nutritious foods and beverages. These minerals are crucial to maintaining overall health and ensuring optimal bodily function.
Many minerals function as electrolytes, which are critical for nerve signaling and muscle performance. When dissolved in bodily fluids, minerals acquire an electrical charge, enabling them to transmit nerve impulses and coordinate muscle movement. Key mineral electrolytes include sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. [15]
Electrolytes also play a critical role in regulating the body’s fluid balance. Without electrolytes, cells could swell and burst due to excess water or shrink from dehydration if the water balance inside and outside cells is disrupted. By working together, electrolytes help sustain optimal fluid levels, preventing dangerous imbalances that could impair bodily functions. [16]
This is why rich electrolyte sources make the best drinks for refreshing and hydrating the body. Health Ranger Select Electrolyte Drops from the Health Ranger Store offer the perfect blend of naturally charged electrolytes to help keep your body hydrated – at a lower cost than mainstream sports drinks and without any toxic additives. Our premium electrolyte drops include four of the main essential electrolytes – magnesium, sodium, potassium and chloride – in a pure unadulterated formula.
Made from naturally processed liquid mineral and trace mineral complexes, as well as potassium chloride, our electrolyte drops are sourced from Utah's Great Salt Lake and solar-distilled without any additives. Health Ranger Select Electrolyte Drops can easily be added to your drinking water or favorite hydrating drinks, including lemonade. They are non-China, certified Kosher and extensively lab tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbiology.
