Top 10 Supplements and superfoods that support healthy energy levels

Energy is the fuel that allows you to move and function properly. From the largest organ in your body to the most basic units of life – cells – all of them depend on energy to operate. Without energy, your body can’t build, repair or maintain bodily tissues that allow you to stay alive and perform your daily activities. [1]

Energy mainly comes in the form of calories. You get calories from the food you eat -- that’s why you should always choose nutrient-dense foods over those with empty calories. Inside your body, calories are converted into energy your cells can use by multiple chemical processes.

These processes require the help of certain nutrients, which you also get from your diet. This is why eating nutritious foods is a necessity, not only so that you can enjoy good health, but also because you need a variety of nutrients to keep your body sufficiently energized throughout the day.

If you’re wondering which foods and nutrients you need to prioritize in your diet, here are 10 of the best superfoods and supplements that can help you maintain optimal energy levels:

1. Organic Coconut Oil

Speaking of foods that can provide quick energy, coconut oil is a superfood that you can rely on. This healthy oil is rich in fatty acids that encourage your body to burn more calories. Studies show that besides providing your brain and body with a source of energy, consuming coconut oil can also increase your daily energy expenditure. [2]

2. Organic Bee Pollen

Bee pollen is a mixture of natural products that honey bees use to make bee bread. Bee bread serves as the main protein source of the entire colony and provides the vitamins and minerals found in royal jelly. Because of its high levels of protein, carbohydrates and B vitamins, bee pollen can help prevent fatigue and support healthy energy levels. [3]

3. Organic MCT Oil

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fat made up of six to 12 carbon atoms. MCTs are the same healthy fats you can find in coconut oil. Unlike other types of fat, MCTs go straight from the gut to the liver, where they are instantly used as a source of energy or converted into ketones. As a result, you get a quick burst of energy when you consume MCT oil. [4]

4. Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that’s involved in more than 300 biochemical reactions inside your body. You need magnesium to support a healthy immune system, as well as the healthy functions of your nerves and muscles. Research also shows that magnesium plays an important role in your body’s production of energy and protein. [5] To increase your magnesium levels, eat lots of green leafy vegetables, as well as nuts, seeds and whole grains. You can also take magnesium supplements to boost your intake of this essential nutrient. [6]

5. Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a natural pigment that gives color to certain microbes, such as yeast and microalgae. This carotenoid is also responsible for the color of shrimp and the pinkish color of salmon. According to studies, astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect your body from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can damage your mitochondria, which are responsible for metabolizing carbohydrates and fats. By protecting your mitochondria from oxidative stress, astaxanthin can ensure that these small structures can keep providing energy for your body. [7]

6. Spirulina

Spirulina refers to any of three blue-green algae widely used today as a health supplement because of their many benefits. These benefits include supporting healthy digestion, as well as optimal brain and immune functions. Because of its abundance of essential nutrients, such as protein, calcium, iron, magnesium and B vitamins, spirulina also promotes healthy energy levels. [8]

7. Organic Broccoli Sprouts

Despite their small size, broccoli sprouts – the first green shoots that emerge from broccoli seeds – are a superfood in their own right. These small veggies contain far higher levels of beneficial nutrients than their mature counterpart, and because of the sprouting process, the minerals they contain are easier for the body to absorb. [9] Like spirulina, broccoli sprouts contain the right mix of essential nutrients that can help you maintain healthy energy levels.

8. Chlorella

Although better known for supporting the body’s natural ability to detox, chlorella can also support healthy energy levels. This nutritious alga contains a unique complex known as chlorella growth factor (CGF), which can supply raw materials to your cells. As a result, your body ends up with more free energy that it can use for other important processes. [10]

9. Organic Camu Camu

Camu camu is a superfruit that hails from the Amazon rainforest in Peru and Brazil. A rich source of antioxidants, especially vitamin C, camu camu can support immune function, as well as the health of your eyes and skin. Recent studies have also found that foods rich in vitamin C can promote healthy energy levels. [11]

10. Organic Coffee

Arguably the most popular and most consumed beverage in the world, coffee is well-loved for its rich taste, pleasant aroma and incredible benefits. Thanks to caffeine, coffee can speed up communication between the brain and the body, thus serving as a great pick-me-up. This can also make you feel more awake and alert. [12] In addition, studies have found that caffeine promotes the breakdown of body fat, which results in the production of more fuel for your cells. This can give your body a quick burst of energy. [13]

Organic blueberries!!! One of my favorite nutritionally rich foods. And so versatile— breakfast, salads, healthy desserts, snacks. We harvest blueberries in summer and pack our freezer full. Then in winter when we are wanting a snack after dinner, instead of popcorn with butter and salt, we bring out a bowl of blueberries. They are great thawed or straight out of the freezer.
