Gargling with mouthwash is an important part of oral hygiene. According to dentists, mouthwash provides a deeper clean after brushing by reaching hard-to-reach spots. But while this solution is clearly meant to provide benefits, many commercial formulations don’t deliver on their promises. Instead, these mouthwashes do more harm than good (especially with frequent and prolonged use) – failed by the very same chemicals their labels claim to make them better and more effective.
Here are common mouthwash ingredients research says you should avoid: [2]
- Artificial sweeteners – Synthetic sweeteners like potassium acesulfame, sodium saccharin and sorbitol are common in commercial mouthwashes. While oral bacteria cannot metabolize these sugars – meaning they can’t feed the microbes that cause tooth decay – recent studies suggest they can negatively impact oral health by altering the composition of your oral microflora. - Alcohol (ethanol) – Ethanol is known for its antiseptic and broad-spectrum antimicrobial effects, hence its use in many personal care products. While helpful for killing microbes, alcohol in mouthwashes can also dry out your mouth, causing gum irritation and disrupting beneficial oral bacteria.
- Artificial dyes and flavors – These additives are added to mouthwash to improve color and taste, but they offer no further benefit. Instead, some reports have linked the presence of these synthetic chemicals to allergic reactions and sensitivities in some mouthwash users.
- Triclosan – This broad-spectrum antiseptic and preservative often serves as the main active ingredient in many mouthwash formulations. Ironically, it’s also one of the main culprits behind many adverse side effects. A 2022 report by the European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety warned that the use of 0.2% triclosan as a preservative in mouthwash is not safe for children and adolescents because of its endocrine-disrupting activities. [4] Meanwhile, the American Academy for Oral & Systemic Health links triclosan to other serious issues, such as allergies, antimicrobial resistance and cancer through its breakdown product, dioxin. Triclosan can also react with chlorinated tap water to form chloroform, another cancer-causing chemical. [5]
- Chlorhexidine – This antimicrobial agent commonly appears in mouthwash formulations because of its ability to kill or prevent the growth of bacteria in your mouth. [6] But like triclosan, it’s not the safe, peerless solution it’s made out to be: A 2025 study from India reported the case of a male patient who developed an allergic reaction, specifically redness and inflammation of the gums, as well as urticarial rash on the skin of the back, after using chlorhexidine mouthwash. [7] Other reported allergic reactions to chlorhexidine in mouthwash include hives, difficulty breathing and swelling of the face, mouth or throat. [8]
Things you compromise when using Commercial Mouthwash:
For years, researchers have been investigating the adverse effects of using commercial mouthwashes reported by consumers. While more comprehensive studies are needed, emerging evidence reveals these side effects are linked to the presence of harsh, often synthetic chemicals in store-bought mouthwashes.
Here’s what science has uncovered thus far:
Oral tissue health
Many commercial mouthwash formulas contain high levels of alcohol, which acts as a drying agent. As the alcohol evaporates from the mouth, it strips moisture from oral tissues, leaving the mouth dry. This can worsen dry mouth or ulcers by irritating already inflamed tissues. [9] By stripping the mouth of saliva – your natural defense against oral bacteria – alcohol-containing mouthwashes also make conditions more conducive to their growth, leading to (or worsening) bad breath.
Here’s the worst part: A review published in the Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology cited multiple studies linking frequent and prolonged use of alcohol-containing mouthwash to adverse oral health outcomes. While the underlying mechanisms remain unclear, researchers hypothesized that increased production of salivary acetaldehyde, a breakdown product of ethanol, and a weakened oral mucosal barrier caused by alcohol exposure may contribute to these adverse effects. Strong antiseptics like chlorhexidine and triclosan don’t just kill harmful oral bacteria – they also eliminate beneficial ones that help keep your mouth healthy. [12] Overuse of these antiseptics can also leave a stain on your teeth and contribute to antibiotic resistance. [13]
Gum health
Alcohol-based mouthwashes can reduce saliva production, leaving your mouth dry with regular use. Without sufficient saliva, your teeth and gums become vulnerable to infections. Alcohol in mouthwash can also irritate sensitive gums, and with frequent use, could cause inflammation and soreness in some individuals, increasing their risk of gingivitis. [15]
Dry mouth, if not addressed over time, can cause gum tissue to pull away from your teeth, exposing their roots. Dentists also warn that without enough saliva neutralizing harmful acids and washing away food particles, your risk for plaque buildup and tooth decay. [16]
Teeth enamel integrity
Manufacturers often add chemicals like citric acid or hydrochloric acid to enhance flavor or balance the solution’s pH level. [17] These acidic ingredients can slowly chew away tooth enamel, your teeth’s protective outer covering, leaving your teeth susceptible to decay.
As reported by a study published in The Scientific World Journal, commercial mouthwashes like chlorhexidine and Listerine can significantly decrease enamel hardness after 7 days and reduce cementum hardness over 15 days. [18] Cementum is the hard, bone-like layer that covers the outer surface of teeth. Regular use of Listerine mouthwash also caused visible color changes in tooth enamel. These findings prompted the researchers to urge caution when using over-the-counter mouthwashes.
